2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo First Drive Review: Practically Perfect In (almost) Every Way

Porsche isn't resting on its laurels with the 2018 Panamera. Even after a major redesign just a year ago, the Panamera gets a new body style (the Panamera Sport Turismo) and the addition of the stunningly powerful Turbo S E-Hybrid variant. This means the Panamera now has three available body styles (standard, Sport Turismo, Executive) and five available powertrains (single-turbo V6, twin-turbo V6, twin-turbo V6 hybrid, twin-turbo V8, twin-turbo V8 hybrid). All of that means the pricing for the 2018 Porsche Panamera is a bit spread out.

Base trim levels come with generous amounts of equipment such as Porsche Active Suspension Management (also known as adaptive suspension or PASM); LED headlights and taillights; a panoramic sunroof; front and rear parking sensors; a rearview camera; heated front seats; Bluetooth; a wide-view 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system (including a navigation system, Apple CarPlay and a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot); and a 10-speaker audio system with satellite and HD radio and USB and auxiliary audio inputs. From there, there are a few bundled options and various trim levels to choose from, but almost every Porsche is available with the same extensive list of stand-alone options.

Porsche equips most Panameras with all-wheel drive. In addition, the 4S gets a more powerful twin-turbo V6 and adds a unique exhaust. The E-Hybrid gets the same V6 as the 4S along with an electric motor and a 14-kWh lithium-ion battery with approximately 30 miles of battery-only driving. From there, it's the Turbo's twin-turbocharged V8 and the Turbo S E-Hybrid's electric-enhanced version of the same engine. While it might seem like a complicated or long list of powertrains, you can basically think of it this way: the faster you want to go in your Panamera, the more you'll have to pay.

Since it spans such a wide pricing range, the Panamera competes with a number of other luxury sedans and wagons. Among those competitors are some of the most refined and powerful sedans on the planet, but the Panamera still stacks up well — both in terms of included and available equipment. Premium levels, both on the Panamera and on rivals, are likely to break the bank of anyone who isn't a millionaire, but in this class of vehicle that shouldn't be surprising. Pricing may be high in this class, but you're getting quite a bit of performance and a more than acceptable amount of luxury appointments. For the perfect luxury sedan, make sure to check out all the reviews available at Edmunds.

4S 4dr Sedan AWD (2.9L 6cyl Turbo 8AM)

While I have only had the car a few weeks, it is everything I expected. Luxurious and refined when desired or a "beast" when you want performance. (Just choose regular, sport, sport plus or custom driving mode.) The car grips the road, including corners, like no sedan I have ever driven. The seats are ultra-comfortable, front and rear. My ratings on reliability and value are only four stars because it is too early to know. Overall I am very pleased with zero regrets. Don't waste another moment spoil yourself today.
