Bentley Unveils Continental GT V8 Models With 542 HP On Tap

Bentley has just unveiled two brand new versions of its third-generation Continental GT and GT Convertible models, both available with a new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 petrol unit, producing 542 HP (550 PS) and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque.

In a straight line, the Coupe can rocket to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.9 seconds (Convertible 4.0 sec), and will top out at 198 mph (318 km/h). Customer deliveries in the U.S. will commence in Q3 of this year, with availability for other regions to be scheduled starting in Q1 of 2020.

Little between them

The new-generation 4.0-liter 32-valve V8 unit features dual twin-scroll turbochargers located inside the ‘V’ of the engine. The 550 PS and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) are sufficient so as to help both versions (Coupe and Convertible) stay within 0.1 seconds of each other. Their 0-100 km/h (62 mph) times are 4.0 seconds for the fixed-roof model and 4.1 seconds for the drop top.

In suitable conditions, the engine can even de-activate four of its eight cylinders, without compromising the drive, says the British automaker. This shift happens in just 20 milliseconds and is said to be imperceptible to customers. Meanwhile, a Stop-Start system which operates at “near-to-stop” speeds is also available.

Plenty of customization

The new V8 versions of the Continental GT and GT Convertible are fitted with 20-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels as standard, although customers can choose from nine other designs measuring up to 22-inches in diameter. There are also seven standard exterior body colors to choose from, while the quad exhaust pipes and subtle V8 badging are there from the get-go.

Inside, there are twenty-way adjustable leather seats, available in a monotone color split on the GT V8 and V8 Convertible. Four other color split options are available, as is contrast stitching, piping and hand cross stitch. There’s new Crown Cut Walnut on the V8 fascia and other areas, and a 10-speaker Bentley Audio system as standard, pumping out 650 watts.

Further features include the digital instrument panel and optional Bentley Rotating Display with a 12.3-inch touchscreen housed inside. Those who opt for the Convertible version can also choose from a range of eight roof lining colors.

All about the driver

Both V8-powered Continental GT models are equipped with front and rear hollow, lightweight anti-roll bars, offering “exceptional handling”, while the adaptive chassis technology created for the automaker’s intelligent Dynamic Ride System can be added as an option. The cars also have air suspension, an active all-wheel drive system, electric power-assisted steering and continuous damping control.

As for active safety, the V8 models feature a wide range of driver assistance goodies such as Active Lane Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Park Assist and more.
