NORTON – A 49-year-old passenger died in a two-car crash on Interstate-495 Saturday night.

At about 10 p.m., two cars collided in the northbound side of the highway near Exit 10. The force caused one vehicle to veer off the highway and strike a tree, Massachusetts State Police said.

The female passenger in the car was killed. Police will not release her name until family members can be notified.

The driver, a 46-year-old Taunton man, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital, police said.

The 22-year-old Middleborough man who was driving the other vehicle, was not injured in the crash, police said.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by troopers assigned to State Police Foxboro, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and the Bristol County State Police Detective Unit.

The Norton and Mansfield Fire Departments assisted at the scene, police said.
