Dodge Dropped The 797 HP Redeye Engine Into A Durango SRT For One Lap Of America

Dodge has created a one-off Durango SRT for One Lap of America that uses the 797-hp supercharged V-8 engine from the Challenger Redeye.

  • One Lap of America is a cross-country race that was started by a longtime >C/D writer, the late Brock Yates.

  • The special Durango also gets upgraded suspension, brakes, and tires, as well as a lightbar and siren.

    1. Dodge has created a one-off Durango SRT that packs the 797-hp supercharged engine from the Challenger Redeye. Called the Durango SRT Pursuit—and nicknamed "Speed Trap"—the insane SUV was developed by SRT Engineering. The supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 produces the same 797 horsepower as it does in the Challenger, which is 322 horses more than the standard Durango SRT makes. The Durango Pursuit remains all-wheel drive, with the engine's 707 lb-ft of torque sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Dodge says the standard torque split is 40/60, but in Track mode the split is 30/70.

This Durango was specifically created for the Tire Rack One Lap of America, a yearly cross-country race that was started by legendary >Car and Driver alum Brock Yates in which teams drive through eight states and race at seven tracks along the way, racking up over 3000 miles in total. Over the years, C/D has participated in the event many times. For this year's One Lap, which runs May 4-11, competitors start and finish at Tire Rack's headquarters in Indiana, hitting up tracks like Road America and the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park.

Dodge says that fitting the new engine to the Durango was "basically a straight swap," because the Redeye motor has the same dimensions as the regular Durango SRT's 392 V-8. The stock SRT hood didn't need to be modified, as it already gave enough clearance for the supercharger. The Pursuit has also been fitted with Kooks long-tube headers, high-flowing catalytic converters, and a catback exhaust system.

To help put all the power down and keep the 5000-pound SUV pointing the correct way, the Durango Pursuit has a set of Mopar lowering springs and new wheels wrapped in 305/35ZR20 Pirelli P Zero tires. And to help stop the SUV, Dodge has fitted larger, two-piece, vented front brake rotors from Brembo; the rear brakes are left stock.

To top everything off, the Pursuit has a custom livery, a siren, and a police-car lightbar mounted to the roof. The Dodge team will be posting updates from the event on their blog, where you can read more about the event and the development of the Pursuit.
