First Look: 2018 Porsche Panamera 4 E Hybrid

We already know that the range-topping Porsche Panamera can get off the line with such ferocity, it can outgun a supercar like the Audi R8, despite its weight.

But the question here, posed by Autocar, is this: can the heavyweight Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid beat one of the fastest accelerating cars in the market, the 911 Turbo S?

Porsche’s hybrid executive car is powered by a combination of a 542hp twin-turbo V8 with a 134hp electric motor, offering a total of 671hp (680PS) and 627lb-ft (850Nm) of torque. The complex hybrid powertrain however also adds a few pounds on the already heavy Panamera, making the Turbo S E-Hybrid tip the scales at a rather hefty 2,310kg (5,092lbs).

Despite the weight, Porsche claims a 0-62mph (100km/h) in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 192mph (310km/h) for the Panamera, numbers that rival a lot of supercars.

The 911 Turbo S on the other hand seems like a featherweight compared to its bigger cousin, at 1,600kg (3,527lbs). Its turbocharged flat-six engine produces 580hp, making it 90hp less powerful than the Panamera.

Is the huge weight difference enough to keep the 911 Turbo S ahead of the electrified Panamera? Or is the latter’s zero-rpm torque enough to beat one of the quickest cars available today?
