Ford Super Duty Is The 2017 Motor Trend Truck Of The Year

Here’s an early peek at a heavily camouflaged 2020 Ford Super Duty pickup truck caught while it was undergoing road testing outside Detroit.

Ford’s entrant in the heavy-duty pickup market will be the subject of some moderate styling and trim changes for 2020. It went though a complete redesign for the 2017 model year. Many of the changes will mimic the face-lift on current model 2018 F-150 trucks.

The 2020 Ford Super Duty will get moderate trim changes for the 2020 model year.

The more substantive changes will be mechanical. It seems likely that a new gasoline-fueled 7.0-liter V8 will supplant the current 6.2-liter V8. The current engine makes 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Expect the 7.0-liter V8, which will be built in a recently revamped plant in Windsor, Ontario, to surpass those numbers while also offering better overall fuel economy.

A 10-speed transmission for the 2020 Super Duty will likely help fulfill that goal. Ford currently offers a 10-speed automatic in its bestselling F-150 full-size pickup truck. A re-engineered 10-speed designed to handle additional torque is a logical addition to the 2020 Super Duty.

Equally likely is a revised and potentially larger displacement version of the 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine popular in Super Duty models. Power should exceed the current 450 horsepower. Torque might leap over the 1,000 pound-foot mark. The current 6.7-liter turbodiesel makes 935 pound-feet of torque.

A revised turbodiesel engine might lag the introduction of the 2020 Ford Super Duty.

In appearance changes, the 2020 Super Duty will get a new, bolder grille and redesigned headlights. The truck’s rear end will have changes that will likely be in the same mold as the changes seen on the 2018 F-150, with revised taillights, tailgate and a new tailgate latch.

The altered Ford Super Duty will be released next year as a 2020 model.
