With over 20 million Hondas recalled already, the list seems endless. Honda recalled another 4.5 million vehicles today in a further investigation of the deadly defect that plagues airbag made by the Takata corporation.
The defect, associated with the chemical propellant that causes the airbags to inflate rapidly, can cause them to inflate with excessive force, sending metal and plastic shrapnel at a high velocity towards occupants.
Honda's total recall number is up to 24.5 million vehicles, and the Takata U.S. recall figure has already set a record for the largest consumer recall in American automotive history. The recall has included a record 34 million vehicles at this point with likely more to come.
Takata researchers have yet to find a root cause for the defects, but are working diligently to determine what caused so many airbags to develop these deadly malfunctions. The recall affects ten global automakers, including BMW, General Motors, and Mazda to name a few.
Takata has ramped up production to cope with the massive replacements that have been necessary, but the company's image in the public eye and among clients has been tainted.
To see if your vehicle has been recalled, you can search by Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at the NHTSA's safercar.gov site.
