Over nearly 80 years, 12 Roman Catholic priests publicly accused of molesting children were assigned to parishes in all corners of Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.
They were scattered throughout the area from 1936 until the early 2000s. They crossed paths over the years, with some serving at the same parish at different times.
Between 1951 and 2003, three priests were assigned 20 years apart each at St. Thomas More in Munster. Three taught at Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond. Two priests served at St. Mary in Crown Point in the 1980s. Two more served at Sacred Heart in LaPorte at the same time in the late 1960s. Two were in Michigan City parishes, Notre Dame and Queen of All Saints, as late as July 2003.
Overall, they served in Cedar Lake, Chesterton, Crown Point, East Chicago, Gary, Griffith, Hammond, Hebron, Hobart, Lake Station, LaPorte, Kouts, Merrillville, Michigan City, Munster, North Judson, Otis, Portage, Schererville, South Bend, St. John, Valparaiso and Whiting, church records show.
