Porsche’s latest is an all-electric Cayman that can charge nearly three-times faster than a Tesla Supercharger.
Porsche presented the Cayman e-volution at the Electric Vehicle Symposium today in Stuttgart. It’s a research vehicle that can charge at a massive rate. The e-volution, which appears to be based on the last-generation Cayman, not the current 718 model, is capable of accelerating from 0-60 miles per hour (100 km/h) in just 3.3 seconds. Porsche also said that the car has a range of 124 miles (200 km).
This isn’t a production-bound vehicle. Porsche has already said that their first EV will be the Mission E electric sports car that will arrive in 2019. This is just a hint at the future. A concept designed to show that Porsche believes electric can still be sporty.
It also showcases Porsche’s Turbo Charging technology. It’s an accumulator-based fast charge system that can charge at 800 volts and up to 320 kilowatts for a single vehicle, or 160-kW for two cars. That’s close to three times the 120-kW charge that a Tesla Supercharger can deliver. And with the Turbo Charging name, Porsche can still put that lovely Turbo script on the back of cars. Even electric ones.
Accumulator-based means that it collects and stores electricity in the charging system in order to deliver it quickly to the vehicle. The system is designed by Porsche Engineering and ADS-Tec. Porsche said that because it stores electricity from lower voltage sources, it is excellent for use in areas where the power system has limitations that prevent the use of current fast chargers. Porsche is planning on building at least one network of these chargers in Europe in a partnership between Porsche, Audi, BMW, Daimler, and Ford.
