Rotary Engine Used In Mazda2 Extended Range Hybrid Prototype

Mazda's rotary engine could make a comeback, though its purpose will be much different compared to its previous life powering the automaker's sports cars. Instead, Mazda is toying with the idea of having the rotary engine serve as a range-extender for a Mazda2 electric hybrid.

Mazda engineers have already produced a prototype, dubbed the Mazda2 RE Range Extender (RE is for rotary engine). The prototype started life as the Mazda2 all-electric vehicle that was first unveiled last year (pictured above), which had an EV range of about 124 miles. The addition of a pint-sized 0.33-liter rotary engine doubles that range, Automotive News reports.
