Skoda has built the first series production Scala compact hatchback at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic.
The hatch that replaces the Rapid Spaceback and bridges the gap between the Fabia and the Octavia is the first Skoda based on VW Group’s MQB-A0 platform.
Designed and developed in Mladá Boleslav, the Scala benefits from assistance systems typically available in higher segments, such as Lane Assist, Blind Spot Detect, Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control. It also comes with available full-LED headlights and taillights, as well as a Sport Chassis Control with Normal and Sport driving modes.
When it launches in Europe at the second quarter of this year, the Scala will offer four engine variants. First to go on sale will be the entry-level 1.0-liter TSI turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine producing 95 PS (94 hp) and its CNG natural gas version rated at 90PS (89hp).
Later on, a mid-range 1.0-liter TSI with 115 PS (113 hp) and a top-of-the-line 1.5-liter TSI four-cylinder making 150 PS (148 hp) will join the range. The Scala will also offer a 1.6-liter TDI turbodiesel rated at 115 PS (113 hp) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque.
All engines feature Stop/Start and brake energy recovery technology. Transmission choices include five- and six-speed manual as well as seven-speed dual-clutch units.
“We are starting a new chapter in Skoda’s compact car range with the new Scala. It is an all-new model that sets benchmarks within its segment in terms of technology, safety, and design. The Scala perfectly embodies the Skoda-typical ‘smart understatement,’” said Skoda CEO Bernhard Maier.
