Good outdoor dining isn’t just a couple of wobbly chairs on a sidewalk. You gotta dress up the place a little bit; you gotta serve food that belongs outdoors. Give your diners some distance from the traffic, or else have a very good reason to stick them right out on a busy sidewalk. So tell us in the comments: What’s the best place to eat outside in your city?
New Yorkers only get to eat outside half the year, but we go all out. For backyard dining, there’s Mudspot in the East Village, Café Mogador in Williamsburg, Cafe Luluc in Boerum Hill, and a beautiful, I’m-suddenly-on-vacation setup at Bricolage in Park Slope. There’s outdoor barbecue at Gowanus’s Pig Beach, rooftop dining at Luna in Astoria and Juliette in Williamsburg, tasty oysters on a sailboat at Grand Banks downtown. And the food stands on Governors Island are tastier than they have any right to be, especially the coconut stand.
What’s your best restaurant backyard, public park food stand, or rooftop table? What place really dresses up the outdoor area, gives you something better than cheap folding chairs, and doesn’t forget the outdoor diners for an hour at a time? What dish tastes particularly good when you eat outside? And since a little negativity is fun: What’s a weirdly popular outdoor venue that’s not as good as it seems?
Remember to name the place and the city it’s in, so locals can find it. And we’ll do outdoor drinking in its own post this summer, but if your favorite bar serves full entrees outdoors, then tell us now! We’ll feature the best responses in the Staff tab below.
