Most people can handle pronouncing the Pagani name. Even the name of the company’s first car — Zonda — rolled off the tongue as quickly as it rocketed to 60 mph. That said, the nameplate affixed to the firm’s latest supercar — Huayra — may leave bystanders tongue-tied.
Technically, the Huayra — which is named after the Aymaran wind god — was supposed to be completely revealed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March, following a series of viral video teasers released on YouTube. After numerous publications began leaking information well in advance, Pagani has apparently decided to let loose, publishing a full web page with a number of photographs and some preliminary information.
Although we’re still not sure exactly how to pronounce its name, the Huayra will undoubtedly be fast. Power comes from an AMG-supplied, twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12, which is rated at 700 horsepower. The powertrain arrangement is somewhat unusual, as the V-12 is mounted in a longitudinal arrangement amidships, while the seven-speed sequential gearbox is mounted transversely.
Thanks to extensive use of composite materials and lightweight alloys, the total vehicle weight has remained under 3000 pounds. The body panels are not only light, but extensive aerodynamic development led to its shape (fitting, considering the Huayra’s namesake). The high nose creates reportedly creates of a wing shape over the front of the car, thus reducing lift. Pagani has also incorporated active aero flaps in the front to allow a balance of downforce and drag. The rear of the car is shaped to channel air over the back, where it relies upon the rear diffuser and active aero flaps — not a large, fixed spoiler — to develop downforce.
Some information is being held back for the big reveal in Geneva come March, but this is enough to see the Huayra’s potential. Even with a name that stymies most etymologists, we are excited to see this thing in person. How it will stack up against competition from the big bopys at Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Porsche remains to be seen, but we’re looking forward to watching the next round of the supercar fight.
